Description of Work Unit
Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The College of Business at Colorado State University is an AACSB accredited business school which enrolls more than 3,800 undergraduate students in six business concentrations and the business administration minor and is the largest undergraduate major on campus. In addition, the college enrolls approximately 1,500 students in five different MBA programs and three department-based graduate programs in the Master of Accountancy, the Master of Computer Information Systems, and the Master of Financial Risk Management. The mission of the Information Technology Department in the College of Business is to develop a robust and state of the art technical platform which propels the college’s programs toward success.
Position Summary
The BI Developer position is a full-time special 12-month appointment with an initial one-year term, renewable contingent upon available funding, continued business needs, and satisfactory performance in the role. This position is within the Business Solutions team in the College of Business IT Department reporting to the CRM Systems and Analytics Manager. This position will be designing, developing, documenting, and configuring custom reports and visualizations, and writing and editing complex SQL queries to fulfill users’ requests. The position will master college specific data and business acumen to develop and maintain databases to meet varying stakeholder needs and requests. Additionally, this position will master new technologies and keep the data infrastructure up to date to meet the needs of the business and implement them into the College IT infrastructure and follows data security and data management best practices. This position will work very closely with departments, business units, and users in the college to satisfy business requirements, train users, and support daily work. A successful candidate is required to have demonstrated proficient SQL coding experience, knowledge, and skillsets as well experience developing and will be a master of the Colleges data sets and business acumen. This position is eligible for hybrid work arrangements upon supervisor approval. The IT Team is committed to hiring employees who provide excellent customer service. The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; the IT department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
Required Job Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems or related field
- 3+ years’ experience in BI development creating BI / interactive reports and visualizations for constituents using tools such as Oracle SQL, MS Power BI, SQL database server, etc.
- 3+ years demonstrated experience writing complex SQL queries
- Demonstrated ability to learn and effectively apply business rules to data reporting and BI projects
- Strong customer service, communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
- The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date. The department will not sponsor a visa for this position
Preferred Job Qualifications
- Proven ability to work independently and as an integral member of a team
- Experience with Higher Ed business understanding and experience in building varying reports and dashboards highly desired
- Experience creating advanced SQL queries
- Experience employing strong communication and collaboration skills to ensure timely completion of projects
- Demonstrated commitment to data quality and integrity
- Demonstrated focus on customer/client needs in completing projects
- Prior professional IT experience working with higher education data
- Familiarity with database modeling and Business Intelligence
- Experience with Power BI
- ITIL Foundation Certified.

Duty/Responsibility
- Serves as a subject matter expert for the College’s data structure and maintains a strong level of business acumen.
- Builds and maintains BI projects with deep business understanding for key users and important business insights in College of Business. Maintains working knowledge of institutional policies, practices, data systems, and operational definitions to identify data anomalies.
- Works with key stakeholders to translate business and data questions into insightful, meaningful BI project development that meet end-user needs.
- Independently writes both simple and complex SQL code, applying specific business rules and acumen to complete reoccurring and ad-hoc requests. Determines how to best extract data from data sources to fulfill project objectives.
- Writes complex SQL queries to extract, transform and load data from the university source systems into our databases, and ensure they are properly maintained following best practices
- Maintains, creates, and modifies dashboards and reports to satisfy requests and stakeholder needs. – Blend data from our data sources to provide life cycle views.
- Builds and maintains the data flow for the BI projects to ensure the data is up to date and accurate for the reports and dashboards and continuously works to improve data modeling capabilities.
- Designs and builds the database to allow for flexibility and scalability.
- Quickly adapts and displays a sense of urgency in a fast-paced work environment to ensure timely delivery of work products.
- Performs rigorous testing, auditing, and data validation processes to ensure data integrity, quality, and accuracy of deliverables.
- Exercise proper security measures as well as personal integrity for handling of data.
- Manage data security, as well as necessary user permissions and access to the data.
- Demonstrates superior customer service and communication skills in all stakeholder interactions.
- Prepares written documentation as needed.
